The SuperEnalotto is the flagship lottery game in Italy a country that has various lotteries that are drawn right across the country.

Within the Italian Lottery system, there are individual, regional lotteries run by Lottomatica and drawn in cities such as Bari, Florence, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Rome and Venice.

The SuperEnalotto is much bigger and is run by a separate, private company in Italy and uses some of the numbers drawn in the Lottomatica regional Italian Lottery draws for its lottery numbers.

Sisal Superenalotto

The Super Enalotto has been run in Italy by SISAL since April 1996 after the Italian Ministry of Finance accepted its bid as the winner in a State competition for the tender of taking over what was the country's biggest and most popular lottery game, the Enalotto.

In summary, it then turned into one of the largest lottery games in Europe, surpassed only by EuroMillions and we are very pleased to be giving the SuperEnalotto a full and detailed review here…

When SISAL won the tender for running the Enalotto lottery in 1996 it proposed some changes to the game's formula, making it simpler and more appealing - the Italian Minister of Finance agreed to these changes on October 30th 1997 and the SuperEnalotto was born.

This brand new version of the old Enalotto was invented by a Swiss, Rodolfo Molo, who's Father, Geo Molo, was one of the co-founders of SISAL back in 1946 - so the family has a long tradition in the Italian gaming industry.

As SISAL Company president, Rodolfo teamed up with various specialists to create an Italian Lottery game that would produce massive jackpots with staggering stakes and was easy to play. He did just that and the SuperEnalotto has proved to be the most popular lottery game in Italy and one of the biggest in the whole of Europe.

The very first Super Enalotto draw took place on December 3rd 1997. It grabbed the Italian population's attention right from the start and was an instant hit with both the public and the media.

The ethos of the game is similar to that of Spain's El Gordo where the wealth is spread across a much wider section of the public than is normal with lottery games.

Due to the stakes involved and the jackpots produced, it is quite common for whole families and even entire villages to pool together for a whole bunch of tickets. This has made lucky Super Enalotto winners out of large groups of people and more people do win on this lottery than in most other games.

How It Works

The Italian SuperEnalotto lottery uses a single matrix of 6/90 meaning that you need to select 6 numbers out of a pool of numbers from 1 to 90 and aim to match your numbers with those drawn. If you match all 6 numbers drawn, you will be a jackpot winner.

The actual works in quite a different way to most other lottery games. The 6 main winning Super Enalotto numbers are all taken from the first number drawn in each of the Lottomatica regional Italian Lotto draws for the cities of Bari, Florence, Milan, Naples, Palermo and Rome.

They are drawn in that precise order and then a "Jolly" number is produced which is the first number drawn in the regional Lotto from Venice. The "Jolly" number is the equivalent to the Bonus number in most other lotteries.

If the first number from any of the cities regional Italian Lottery draws (in the order mentioned) has already been used for the SuperEnalotto draw that day, the second number from the regional draw will be used unless that too has already been taken. If so, the third number will be used and so on until each Super Enalotto number is unique and not repeated.

If you match 5 of the main numbers in the draw, you will then have the chance to also match the "Jolly" number and if you match this too, you will win the 2nd prize.

The SuperEnalotto jackpot starts out at €1,300,000 and each week it is not won, it is added onto the next draw, increasing until the numbers are all correctly matched. Due to the fact that the guess-range is so wide, rollover draws and massive jackpots are very common and some of the largest jackpots in Europe are regularly produced.

You can win in 5 different ways by matching all 6 main numbers, 5 main numbers plus the "Jolly" number, 5 main numbers, 4 main numbers or just 3 main numbers.

Draws for the Super Enalotto take place three times per week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 7.30pm Italian time.

The cost of playing the Super Enalotto is just €1.00 and for this you get 2 plays.

Who Can Play

Similar to most lotteries in Europe and the US and around the world, previously, only residents living in the Italy were allowed to play in any of the Italian Lottery games including the SuperEnalotto. You used to have to purchase your lottery tickets from an authorised retailer based in Italy itself.

Now, however, with the convenient presence of authorised and genuine online lottery ticket sales agencies such as TheLotter you are able to select your Super Enalotto numbers online and purchase your tickets no matter where in the world you live.

This is fantastic news of course if you live outside of Italy and want to play the Super Enalotto and ensure your entry into the next draw or just want to have the convenience and ease of being able to buy lottery tickets online.

Once you have entered into draw, you can then easily check the SuperEnalotto results online at your lottery ticket agent's website to see how you have done and to find out if you have become one of the lucky winners.

You must be 18 years of age to be eligible to purchase a ticket for any of the Italian Lottery games including the Super Enalotto.

Information and Background

SISAL introduced their own satellite television channel in 1997 SISAL TV which would broadcast results, news, events and information relating to the games world throughout their 14,000 retail network of shops.

It is the only TV station that broadcasts information solely related to the area of gaming. The most frequent winning numbers on the SuperEnalotto have been 88, 81, 82, 01, 77, 85 and 86. The most frequent "Jolly" numbers have been 64, 90, 04, 07 and 28. An extra chance was given to players from 2006, when the SuperStar version of the game was launched.

What Are The Odds

The odds on the SuperEnalotto Lottery are staggering which is just why the jackpots can be so huge and so many people, even outside of Italy, play the game. The only odds to compare would be that of the Europe-wide game of Euromillions which also produces massive jackpots.

There are 5 different ways in which you can win on this game that produces thousands of winners every single week.

The chances of winning a Super Enalotto jackpot are 1 in 622.61 million and for these odds if you were a winner, you would be sure to get a healthy sized jackpot.

For one of the prizes on the second level, the odds come in at 1 in 103.76 million.

The likelihood of you winning a third tier prize comes in at 1 in 1.23 million and for a prize on the fourth level the odds are reduced right down to just 1 in 11,907.

For a prize on the fifth and final level, the odds are just 1 in 327.

Record Jackpots

In October 1998, barely a year after the SuperEnalotto began, 100 players - almost the whole village of Peschici - made lottery history & created a record when they shared a jackpot win of €32,706,977.38.

The 1998 record was broken on August 13th 2003 when the jackpot reached €65,985,105.96 and was scooped by a lucky winner from Veduggio con Colzano, Milan.

The record was broken again on May 4th 2005 when 10 lucky Super Enalotto players from Milan shared a single-ticket jackpot win of €72,090,405.19 - equivalent to $93 million - and this record stood for over three years.

The largest ever jackpot won on the SuperEnalotto up until recently was won on October 23rd 2008, when a lucky winner from Catania scooped €100,756,197.00. This is also the record figure for an individual win. In American Dollars this equated to $128 million!

A much more recent massive jackpot on the Sisal Enalotto has resulted in the largest ever Super Enalotto win - indeed, the largest ever lottery win in European lottery history. On 23rd August 2009, after many months of Rollovers, the great Sisal Enalotto jackpot reached an incredible 147.8 MILLION Euros and was won by a single ticket by a resident in the small Italian town of Bagnone.

Other huge and notable wins include the €71,439,610.83 jackpot that was won in Capanni Di Savignano Sul Rubicone, Forlì-cesena on May 19th 2007 and the jackpot that reached €62,524,371.05 on December 17th 2005 and was won in Sangano, Torino.
